An Island Teaches Scientists About Life
More than sixty years ago, some fishers were on a boat. They were near
Iceland. They saw black ash! It went up nine kilometers! It came from a
volcano in the ocean! It was scary!
六十多年前，一群漁夫在漁船靠近冰島時，目睹黑色火山灰從海裡衝上雲霄，高度達到九公里!
那是海底火山爆發!
The next day, a small island came out of the ocean. Rocks and lava came out
of the volcano! Every day, the island was taller and longer. Three and a half
years later, the volcano stopped.
第二天岩漿就形成了一個小島，而因為岩漿跟岩石繼續噴發，小島持續長高變長。三年半之後，火山活動終於停止。
Scientists wanted to learn how plant and animal life start on a new land. But
people bring changes to new lands. So Iceland keeps this island safe from
people. Some scientists can go there. But no one else can.
為了讓科學家好好研究動物跟植物如何在嶄新的島上開始生活，冰島政府只准科學家去，一般人禁止登島。
Scientists have learned a lot. Seeds come to the island on ocean waves.
Insects come on the wind or the ocean. Birds fly to the island. They bring
more seeds. Seals swim to the island.
科學家發現海浪會帶來植物種子，風帶來昆蟲，鳥也會飛來，傳播更多種子。海豹也會游上岸。
Bird waste and seal waste help plants grow. The island has slowly become
green.
鳥類跟海豹的排泄物成為肥料，讓植物蓬勃生長，小島慢慢變成了綠色。
Scientists learned plants and animals find new lands in many ways. They
learned what helps new lands become green too!
