Sailing the Humpback Highway to Help Save Humpbacks
The Maori are New Zealand's Indigenous people. Whales are important to them.
These very big ocean animals gave the Maori meat, milk, oil, and more.
毛利人是紐西蘭原住民，座頭鯨對他們很重要，它提供了鯨魚肉、奶、魚油等資源。
The Maori went from Polynesia to New Zealand long ago. They say whales kept
them safe on the sea. So the Maori are called "whale riders."
毛利人被稱為鯨魚騎士，他們認為很久以前是因為座頭鯨的保護，才能從波利尼西亞來到紐西蘭。
Every year, these whales swim from New Zealand to Polynesia. They swim one
thousand six hundred kilometers! The way they go is called the "humpback
highway."
每一年，座頭鯨從紐西蘭游到波利尼西亞，總共要游一千六百公里!
這條路線被稱為「座頭鯨公路」！
One hundred years ago, there were twenty thousand humpback whales. There are
about ten thousand now. They need to be kept safe. The Maori want the world
to know this.
一百年前，有兩萬頭座頭鯨，現在只剩下大約一萬頭。毛利人希望全世界知道，這些鯨魚需要被保護。
They sent ten Indigenous women sailors to the humpback highway. The sailors
sailed a small Polynesian ship. This kind of ship has been used for thousands
of years.
毛利人派出十個女水手，搭一種有千年歷史的小船，到「座頭鯨公路」。
The women took DNA from the humpback highway. Now New Zealand scientists can
find out which whales are swimming there.
他們收集鯨魚DNA，讓紐西蘭的科學家研究游過那裡的鯨魚。
The sailors were heroes helping humpbacks!
