Women Dive to Fight Ghost Gear
Plastic bags and bottles are a big problem in the ocean. But the ocean has a
bigger plastic problem. It is "ghost gear."
很多人都知道，海洋中有大批塑膠垃圾。不過更多的其實是幽靈捕魚工具。
Ghost gear is plastic fishing gear that nobody uses. The gear is fishing
nets, lines, and traps. It is broken, thrown away, or lost.
幽靈捕魚工具包括漁網，漁線跟抓魚的陷阱。這些東西有的被丟進海裡，有一些被海浪折斷就漂流出去。
Ghost gear keeps catching fish and other ocean animals. And every year, the
ocean gets half a million to one million tons of new ghost gear.
它會纏住許多海洋生物，更糟糕的是，每年都有多達百萬噸的捕魚器具流進海中。
Some women in Mexico are very worried about ghost gear. They are fishers.
They know the ocean well. Early in the morning, they dive into the ocean.
They take away ghost gear. They do not get money to do this.
墨西哥有一批女性漁夫很擔心這些垃圾，於是她們一大早就潛入水中清理那些器具，而且是免費做。
Sometimes the ghost gear they find is very big. One fishing net the women
took was 90 meters long. Seventeen divers cut the net carefully. It took two
days! Then they pulled the two-ton net from the ocean.
有時候那些垃圾太大，比如說有一回，漁網長達九十公尺，十七個人花了兩天時間，小心地把漁網剪斷，再把重達兩噸的漁網從水裡拖出來。
